We’ve only just begun

Originally Released: August 21, 1970

About this cover: Sara wanted to sign to a song with me, and I let her choose. She chose this song, and I’m happy she did. It’s a very nice song by one of my favorite groups, with the magical voice of the late Karen Carpenter. Wrecking Crew studio bassist Joe Osborn had performed the original bassline, and I tried to get as close to it as I possibly could.
The background image is the very spot in the park in Palm Springs, CA where Sara and I were married in 2014.

Song Facts: This started out as a bank commercial. Songwriters Paul Williams and Roger Nichols were commissioned by an advertising agency to write it in 1968 for Crocker Bank, which was trying to attract young people and newlyweds to their institution. Richard Carpenter heard the jingle on the commercial and asked Paul Williams to write a complete song.
Carpenter selected the composition for the duo’s third single and included it on the LP Close to You. Released in August 1970, the single featured Karen’s lead vocals and the overdubbed harmonies of both siblings. Following their hit “(They Long to Be) Close to You” onto the charts, “We’ve Only Just Begun” hit No. 1 on the Cash Box singles chart and No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 behind The Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There” and The Partridge Family’s “I Think I Love You”, becoming the pair’s second million-selling gold single. It was considered by both Karen and Richard to be their signature song. According to The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits (6th edition), on the U.S. Adult Contemporary singles chart, it was the duo’s best-performing tune, lasting seven weeks at No. 1 (beating the six-week stay at the top of “Close to You”). The song also helped them to win two Grammy Awards in 1971: Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Performance by a Duo, Group, or Chorus (for “Close to You”).

  1. Such a great way to start off the new year Pam! You and Sara are such a great team when it comes to making music video covers. You’re playing style on the Hofner is superb, and your bass line certainly fits the emotion of the song – not to mention Sara’s signing contributing to that emotion. A great performance from both of you along with a backdrop that helps tie the entire performance together. Loved it!!

    1. Thank you Lanny, and happy New Year to you as well.
It does my heart good to have Sara join me in the enjoyment of something to which she has been denied her entire life, the joy of music.

  2. Excellent Pam and Sara!

Great job and Happy New Year to both of you!
